Book Cover

Valley of the Dolls was published in 1966. This book cover is an exercise in retro design. Pink and black were a popular color combination in the 1960's. This design combines splashes of pink with black and white photos, and also incorporates softer shades of gray for femininity. The overlapping pill shapes are reminiscent of geometric wallpaper patterns of the era. The Broadway font was used for the book title, and alludes to the acting careers of the book's characters. A handwriting font is used to prescribe ten chapters a day to cure boredom. The opening quote of the book, "You've got to climb Mount Everest to reach the Valley of the Dolls," rises and descends from the peak of the great mountain.
